Ramadas Kamath
While elaborating some of the best practices adopted by the team at Infosys, Kamath explains, “We measure operational data at a granular level. Once you have data at a granular level, it can help you prioritise your initiatives and implementing right measures, and evaluate their impact. Always remember, you can only manage what you measure.”
Lack of awareness in the industry about technologies and initiatives is a challenge, states Kamath. IT companies largely operate on rented office spaces and one can see all-glass buildings coming up everywhere. This type of design neither helps the developer nor the end-user. The other challenge is that the building operations cost is a fraction compared to the manpower costs of employees working in the building, which deters companies from giving importance to operating costs. The third issue is lack of buildings-related data in the industry. There is no industry benchmark or standard on efficiencies to guide companies’ operations.
“It is essential to build capacity and improve the overall quality of workforce involved in building operations. The manpower handling operations is mostly unskilled and in most cases a lot of manual operation is involved, which is inherently one of the causes of inefficiency. Automation will drive the future of operations in the industry and is a key to ensure efficient operations,” encapsulates Kamath.
