The best a facility management team can do to make a sustainable workplace is to increase the efficiency of resource – use and reduce the impacts on health and environment. This can be achieved by making people aware that they can contribute, efficiently using energy, water and other resources, protecting occupant health and improving employee productivity, and reducing waste, pollution and environmental degradation.

Agnani states that one of the biggest challenges is the availability of alternate sources of power to manage energy requirements. “Since most of us are in campuses, it is largely dependent upon practices adopted by the landlord. Aside from this, the subsidies provided by the government in resources and the initial capital for deployment is very high, making the entire project ROI unviable. We need players who can come into action at the building stage and become a mandate for large-sized campuses to be able to capitalise.”

Internal to the organisation, there needs to be a detailed educational programme for all verticals and user profiles to ensure continuous awareness of performing teams as well as leveraging on collaboration within users. Externally, standardisation, codes and ease of execution are needed to make the programme financially viable for all types and sizes of organisations and offices.
