All facility managers should consider both, utilisation of space and future expansion, while looking for premises for the company’s building. This exercise helped D’Mello’s previous organisation, Reliance ADAG, in optimising the usage of space and saving on rents, which meant company funds were not blocked in unproductive interests.

Now, more and more corporate firms are concerned about their carbon footprint and towards the measures they can take to minimise the same. D’Mello suggests that this can be achieved by installing solar panels for power needs, which leads to energy savings as well as financial boost in the long run. Open and breakout spaces that utilise natural lighting to the fullest are alternates that aid in saving energy too.

He opines that a successful facility manager should be aware of the changes taking place in and around his environment and implement them within his organisation as necessary, keeping in mind the industry they represent. It will also depend on the geography and the resources available at their disposal. Providing better facilities to employees will result in higher employee satisfaction and gradually increase efficiency.
