Archana Van Gils, Founder and Principal Architect - AVG Architecture En Interiors.
  1. What is the inspiration behind your design firm’s name?

This firm’s journey started just with me sitting, dreaming and operating from my dining table. Hence the name AVG Architecture en Interiors has been derived from my initials. As an architect and designer, my primary motivation has been to create designs that embody the needs and desires of my clients. Our name, therefore, reflects this personal commitment that I have made to my profession:  to create innovative, functional, minimal yet luxurious spaces that reflect the unique persona of the inhabitants.

  1. What is that one design book/movie you found inspiring?

There are many books and movies that have inspired my work as an architect and designer. One book that stands out to me is “The Architecture of Happiness” by Alain de Botton. In this book, de Botton explores the ways in which architecture affects our emotions and our well-being, and how good design can make us feel more connected to our surroundings.

  1. In what ways does your personality reflect in your designs?

I am a highly detail-oriented and organized person, and this is quite evident in the precision and thoughtfulness of every AVG design. Creating spaces that are functional, comfortable, and relatable, is what we as a team also stand by. I truly believe that good design should be both aesthetically pleasing and highly functional, and I strive to achieve this balance in all of my creative endeavors.

  1. What inspires you in your day-to-day architectural practice?

Personal human interactions and traveling is what inspires my design visions. Conversing with any other individual, in my opinion, is discovering an array of new perspectives to a topic. Therefore, I constantly aim to learn from clients, seniors, peers and sometimes even my team; to amplify my knowledge and skills. As a result, when I seek to design a space, it has less chances of being mono-directional; but rather a fine blend of unique ideas and my expertise.

  1. Who is your favorite architect?

I have many favorite architects whose work has influenced my own. Some of the architects who have inspired me the most include Antoni Gaudi and Zaha Hadid. Each of these architects have a very unparalleled style and approach to design, but what strikes me the most is the courage that they possessed. Both these professionals never sought to design anything that was as per trend or based on what was appreciated. Rather they expressed their creative intrinsic self, through their design, and that takes courage!

  1. Do you have a signature style?

My work is characterized by a unique blend of contemporary and traditional design elements. I strive to create spaces that are elegant, simple, and functional. I am particularly interested in using color and pattern to create a sense of warmth and vitality in my designs, and I often incorporate natural elements and locally-sourced materials in order to create a sense of relevance and context.

  1. The one design philosophy you swear by?

A timeless design is a fine blend of aesthetics and functionality – that is what I believe in. Every space has its own character and personality, and that a good design should be the soul that brings it to life. At AVG, when we are able to curate spaces that are not only beautiful, but that also enhance the well-being and quality of life of the people who use them; only then in our dictionary have we done justice to the design.

8. The one design quote you find timeless?

The one design quote I find timeless is by Frank Lloyd Wright, who said, “Form follows function – that has been misunderstood. Form and function should be one, joined in a spiritual union.” This quote speaks to the importance of creating designs that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing, and it is a philosophy that I strongly can vouch for.

9. A hobby that sets you apart?

Well, I am a health nut and my day always starts with a rigorous round of workouts. Personally, this has largely aided to synchronize my body and mind, to an extent that it elevates my thinking capabilities as an Architect. I am not sure if this sets me apart, but this is something that completes my day.

10. A message to those few young practicing Architects out there?

Be curious, be passionate, and never stop learning. Architecture is a constantly evolving field, and it is essential to stay up-to-date with the latest trends and technologies. It is also important to be passionate about your work and to approach every project with enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.

11. Which design blog/page/handle do you follow avidly?

Well I am an avid reader and enjoy scrolling through projects of other professionals. This actually has helped broaden my horizons and knowledge about the varied facets of the Built World. So ArchDaily and Dezeen seem to be doing great as online platforms. Where print media is concerned, A+D, Architects and Interiors India and Home & Design Trends are great magazines which are selective with their features and thus, present really good content.
