Where calm meets capacity: Dojo Design Studio’s innovative office project in Mumbai

The architect gave the entire studio a subtle facelift by incorporating calmer and more soothing tones and natural light, resulting in an uplifting workplace

The backstory

A ball bearing company had a clear vision when they decided that the office they recently bought needed a revamp – they wanted it to be a workplace that encouraged a calm and positive environment with maximum storage and seating capacity.

With this in mind, they approached Dojo Design Studio to give the place a facelift. “Our goal was to make the space bright and airy by incorporating calmer and soothing tones, with natural light penetrating through and complementing the palette,” says Nirali Mehta Gandhi.

Planning and layout

A rectangular 500 sq.ft office space was planned in such a way that it is divided into 3 designated areas for storage (150 sq.ft- filled with racks for storage), a workspace, and a main cabin to maximize the use of the available space. The central area of the office is reserved for employees with open-plan workstations and ample storage.

The right side is reserved for the main cabin as it provides a private space for meetings, client interactions, and other important tasks. Finally, the left section of the office is for storage.

Seamless walkthrough

Upon entering the office, one is greeted by a small entrance console cladded in stone veneer which creates a mark upon the entry and also displays the company logo as well the company products.

With this console, the space is divided into two areas, one where employees are busy with packaging, answering calls, and sending off deliveries. The second part behind the console is where the rest of the team manages logistics on their desktops.

Play of neutral hues

The architect decided to go with neutral palettes with lots of whites i.e. white laminate, and white brick textured wall creates a clean and calming atmosphere, while the teakwood and light wood shelves and frames add warmth and texture to the space.

The addition of blue in the workspace area was introduced to add some personality and energy into the space as blue is known for its calming and uplifting energy.

This can be especially beneficial in a work environment where people spend long hours sitting in front of a computer or performing repetitive tasks.

Main cabin

The main cabin and the workspace have been separated by the partition wall with a pocket of etched glass in-between and the wooden framed ribbed glass door. The use of glasses helped to create a balance between openness and privacy. It not only looks appealing but also adds texture and visual interest to the workspace, and allows for natural light to pass through.

The architects designed the main cabin around a director’s desk, ample file storage, a small mandir, and a work table for two.  In order to maintain the very subtle, positive elegance of the space and to give the director the sense of calm he desired, we chose the natural palette of light wood and white.

The oak wood finish tiles blended with the oak wood coloured laminate on the wardrobe to create warmth in the cabin. It is teamed up with an onyx marble table top with green and white veins on it creating a sophisticated look. Inside the cabin, the upholstery and plants add a hint of olive green.

Along with the table top, the walls in the cabin were clad in marble finish tiles. The Natural light passing through the window further enhances the space, creating a bright and open atmosphere.
