Ruby Goswamy, Partner & Principal Architect, Design Square.

1. What is the inspiration behind your design firm’s name?

As a design firm, we mainly engage in design philosophies centered around straight lines, squares, and cubes. We usually follow this principle from the conceptualization stage of any design, which allows us the liberty to develop and create the most intricate details in an extremely simplistic way. As a result, the term ‘Design Square’ was chosen as it best suited our design language and aptly characterized our work profile.

2. What is that one design book/movie you found inspiring?

Form, Space, and Order by Francis D.K. Ching was the book that first introduced me to the world of design and its underpinnings when I was still a student trying to understand the spirit of this profession with such an extensive vocabulary and scope. However, it all centered around the founding elements of form, space, and order. Hence, this book has always stayed with me as a piece of guidance and inspiration.

 3. In what ways does your personality reflect in your designs?

In my life and demeanor, I try to be simple and elegant, unobtrusive yet refined. All of this is reflected in my designs, which all feature the same essence.

4. What inspires you in your day-to-day architectural practice?

We approach design in a manner that reflects the ideals and personality of the clients. Their excitement and contentment to finally acquire their dream home as desired; inspires and motivates me to dedicate more time to designing better each time.

5. Who is your favourite architect?

I’ve always loved Frank Lloyd Wright’s work as an architect. We have always been influenced by his “Organic Architecture” design philosophy, which he referred to as designing in harmony with people and the environment. As a takeaway from his ideologies, we also ensure to give importance to landscaping and frequently include natural elements in our creations.

6. Do you have a signature style?

We would like to refer to our work as “Modern Classic” even if we are unable to categorize it under one particular genre as it constantly changes and evolves in accordance with customer needs. We offer regal designs with intricately carved interiors, including inlays, carvings, and artistic ornamentation, that are relatively simple to maintain. Every component in the space is in perfect harmony and exhibits refinement, providing the interior with an opulent and plush impression.

7. The one design philosophy you swear by?

With every new design, we innovate and experiment, never adhering to a single design philosophy. We strive to keep things simple, tasteful, and balanced.

8. The one design quote you find timeless?

I love Michelangelo’s phrase, “I am Still Learning,” and it’s one of my favourites.

9. A hobby that sets you apart?

I make an effort to fully celebrate life and find great pleasure, cheerfulness, and fulfillment in embracing every moment, caring for others, and giving a helping hand.

10. A message to those few young practicing Architects out there?

All aspiring architects should never forgo their passions and aspirations. Never lose faith in oneself; be patient; work diligently; and rejoice in everything you do. Success and smiles are sure to follow.

11. Which design blog/page/handle do you follow avidly?

I am an ardent Pinterest user.
