Why is being savoir-faire important in design?

Sajal Lamba, Co-Founder and Director, Wriver.

In general terminology, savoir-faire is defined as the capacity for appropriate social action. In design, this approach encapsulates thoughtfulness, comfort and sophistication — which are especially essential in commercial spaces. Through interior design, one can layer the ambience with suitable patterns, colours, and furnishing when conceptualising the décor and make it aesthetically appealing. To attain the same, it’s pivotal that form, functionality and design work harmoniously. A warm and inviting commercial space imparts positive vibes contrary to a cacophonic and cold ambience.

Some critical elements of a savoir-faire design include good planning, creative thinking, space management, and precise execution. Applying and blending a multitude of interior design techniques can build a room visually and transform its ambience. For example, an inviting and pleasing lobby would facilitate conversations and encourage the user to hang out or wait in the area. In addition, simple touches such as having a coffee table with magazines or a comfortable chair can make a world of difference.

Good design is the result of thought put into a work which renders it interesting and touching. When this work stimulates the mind and pleases the heart, it converts into a great design. Furniture, in general, should evoke emotions and celebrate materiality while energising spaces. For example, furniture made from state-of-the-art machinery and advanced technology can be finished with fine craftsmanship, providing a distinctive touch to the ambience.

Moreover, such designs bring in the thoughts of the makers and the intentionality of the production. Hence, thoughtfulness when conceptualising any design can transform an ordinary piece of furniture into a marvellous one. Being savoir-faire in designs helps:

Increase productivity

A business’s success depends largely on its employees’ efficiency and quality, so it’s necessary to have a motivated workforce. Likewise, the interior of any space affects the occupants’ quality of life and how they interact in this environment.

Make a good impression

Your decor speaks volumes about your commerce or business and thus can make or break your image. In addition, impressive interior design resonates with success, credibility and a professional attitude that can help build client trust.

Trigger brand recall

Your interiors should further reflect your brand ethos, principles and core values. For instance, a legal firm would have sophisticated interiors with a bold and assertive design narrative, while a creative or advertising agency would experiment more with colours and out-of-the-box designs.

Enhance functionality

At the end of the day, the design scheme you select should ensure functionality and serve its intent, thus adding value to that space. Some examples are practical storage in workspaces or adding biophilia for a pleasant vibe in the lobby or common areas.

An appealing look emerges naturally out of thoughtful design. Hence, being savoir-faire in design can reinforce how you want to feel within a space, what the experience will be and what values you communicate.
