Frequently Asked Questions on BIM – Part 4

We get experts at Voxel1 Solutions to answer some of the most frequenly asked questions (FAQs) about BIM and its implementation process

Frequently Asked Questions on BIM - Part 4

1. With BIM can we do Delay Analysis on project implementation?
Ans: Yes, BIM models when integrated with Construction Schedule – planned vs. Existing can be compared in 3D to understand the project delay and can also plan the mitigation activities accordingly. This is 4D BIM – Where BIM Models are integrated with Time.

2. Can it be use for the large projects and other team members work on same file at same time. Like we have xref in AutoCAD?
Ans:
Yes, Cloud based technologies for BIM are now evolved to support organizations working from various offices to access the same BIM model for live design coordination. Feel free to write to me at kesari.payneni@voxel1.com for a more detail conversation on BIM Cloud based implementation.

3. Can we get render model in BIM? Like Vray?
Ans:
Yes.. Most of the BIM Authoring tools provide rendering features that are matured enough to produce high-quality renders… BIM Models can also be exported into other mainstream rendering tools for material, texturing, lighting, and rendering as well.

4. How to integrate MS Project Planning module in BIM?
Ans:
BIM for Construction Simulation requires a different set of tools other than the typical BIM Modelling software…Many options are available currently in the industry to integrate construction schedule to BIM Model.

5. What is difficulty level of Facade LOD in terms of time and skill?
Ans
: Façade modelling is typically an efficient process ones the major library items are properly developed with the right parameters. I would say software skill required for façade modelling would be at 8/10

6. Indian clients are prone to change the design very frequently. So we as MEP CONSULTANT to change / revised the drawings more no of times and our man hrs goes into that. Will we able to control on this by using BIM. Just need suggestion
Ans:
Yes…Few key reasons behind frequent design changes are
• Lack of understanding on the project requirements & goals
• Lack of proper coordination with all team members early in the project
• Overall lack of collaboration across multiple team members both within a single team as well as multiple offices.
Knowing this, BIM primary targets to resolve all the above challenges.

7. In a single project – can we have multiple sub-projects or wrok packages – like – buildings, roads , sewer  network , Transmission line etc.?
Ans
: Yes…BIM Models are broken down in multiple files basing on the “File Breakdown Structure” defined early in the process to have Towers, Roads, Sewers, etc. Modelled separately as sub-projects.

8. Can Arbitrator use BIM output for Dispute Resolution
Ans:
This pretty much depends on the contract terminology documented and agreed upon by two parties. I have seen both scenarios where BIM is used only as a FYI vs. BIM is used as the only accurate representation of the information.

9. Is it the training programs to start with?
Ans:
The starting point could be training program at the management level as the most effective approach we have seen is “Top Down” where the management decides and formalizes the BIM Implementation roadmap and ensures the functional groups are following up.

These questions were collated during the webinar session on “The complete guide to BIM implementation”.
