Kerala poised for big leap in sports infrastructure with an investment of over INR 900 crores

The state is poised for major strides in sports infrastructure with a total investment of INR 900 crores with the setting up of more than 48 stadiums at district, municipal and panchayat levels with Kerela Infrastruture Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) funding.

The project being implemented by the Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs is at different stages of planning and execution, according to Kerala Industrial and Technical Consultancy Organisation Ltd, which has undertaken the work on a concept to commissioning basis.

Of these 24 are under execution and others in different stages of tendering, DPR preparation and tchnical approvals. KITCO has become a Special Purpose Vehicle and has been created for executing teh project. The public sector technical consultancy will be resposible for feasibility studies, preparation of detailed project reports, detailed designs, estimates, tendering and project managament.

The state recently launched the construction of Thomas Sebastian Indoor Stadium Complex, which is conceived as the district stadium complex. The facility has been planned as part of the government’s policy of developing sports infrastructure across the state, giving a thrust to sporting aspirations at the grassroots. The indoor stadium, proposed in the 2016-17 budget, is coming up at an area of 6.35 acres at an estimated cost of Rs 34.25 crore. It will be a two-storeyed modern indoor stadium with 2,400-metre playing area, a sevens football ground and other allied features to host major sporting events.
