Roshni Kshirsagar, Partner, SJK Architects.

1. What is that one design book/movie you found inspiring?

I recently saw a kitchen drama called “The Bear”. There was a lot that I could draw-from how a kitchen operates, the French Brigade system of hierarchy, focus and attention leading to sheer genius. I really enjoyed the many parallels between a kitchen and design practise.

2. In what ways does your personality reflect in your designs?

There are certain ingrained qualities such as accountability, a strong visual sensibility and vulnerability with which I operate. However, over the years, good design has impacted my personality and vice versa.

3. What inspires you in your day-to-day architectural practice?

Everyday mundane things-A ride to our office in Colaba, a walk through a bustling market and the way even the smallest vendor uses “visual merchandising” to attract customers, preparing a meal in my kitchen or watching a good show! Being born and bred in this maximum city, I have learned to adapt and let the city inspire me.

4. Who is your favourite Architect?

Carlo Scarpa! I find his works ahead of its time. The juxtaposition of materials, beautifully crafted details true to the space and function, all coming together to offer spaces and experiences that are timeless.

5. Do you have a signature style?

I do not believe in signature style, design to me emerges from the need to problem solve. As a designer, how we develop the solution through craft, technology and context makes each outcome unique and therefore a signature statement on its own.

6. The one design philosophy you swear by?

I have grown to deeply believe in the power of nature-the sun and the wind and its impact on our lives.

7. The one design quote you find timeless?

Not a quote, but my strong design philosophy (see above) is time tested!

8. A hobby that sets you apart?

I wouldn’t call it ahobby, but a life skill-to cookI am teaching myself everything about food-how it is grown and how it reaches the table !

9. A message to those few young practising Architects out there?

Build a strong foundation first. Work with a firm whose philosophy aligns with your beliefs.

10. Which design blog/page/handle do you follow avidly?

I get my design dose from a bunch of portals-Dezeen, Arch daily, Wallpaper magazine.
