Continuing the exploration into the cloud system that features throughout their portfolio of projects,
designers Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec have unveiled ‘Nuage, Promenade’, a modular pergola that brings shade, shelter and seating to the vibrant pedestrian walkway Paseo Ponti, which runs through the heart of the Miami Design District. Manufactured by global art and design fabricators UAP, the 100 metre-long, five-metre-high installation was unveiled during Design Miami, the annual design festival that was held alongside Art Basel Miami Beach last month. The canopy installation strongly references the Bouroullec Brothers’ close affinity for modular systems and a desire to create forms that represent poetic practicality. “We don’t want to make only functional pieces,” Erwan noted. Constructed from stainless steel, the canopy will activate the pedestrian experience, creating spaces that people will want to connect to, engage with and inhabit. The modular clouds are glazed with a combination of four unique shades of glass to shield the canopy and its visitors from the elements. This glass glaz,e in conjunction with the adjacent cylindrical forms, casts a colourful rippling light effect on the path below.
