In an era where budget-friendly no longer needs to mean charmless, a fresh interior design vision for the Ibis Budget Tbilisi emerges, as conceived by STUDIO SHOO. Taking a decidedly transformative approach to the project, the architects set about redesigning the hotel’s public areas, reinventing the conventional ethos of budget brands in the process.
An unexplored hub
Located on Akhvlediani Street, a vibrant hotspot beloved by locals and tourists for its thriving bar and restaurant scene, the hotel building became a canvas for the creative exploration of the architects. The pulse of the neighbourhood, its street art, and lively music scene offered immediate inspiration for the lobby design, seeping into the fabric of the transformed space.

Evoking senses
Dominating the new interior is an arresting palette centred around various shades of blue. Complementing this serene backdrop are bursts of bright colours – energetic red and sunny yellow. This striking colour scheme not only echoes the local spirit but also captures the attention and invigorates the senses of the hotel’s guests.
Detailed furniture
Every piece of furniture and lighting fixture was meticulously designed following the team’s sketches, showcasing a well-crafted blend of aesthetics and functionality. One standout element is the reception desk, cleverly shaped as a music cassette. Behind it, a unique collection of vintage vinyl records nestles on a specially designed shelf, visually echoing the music-inspired motif and creating a striking focal point.

A vital source of inspiration for the design team was the Georgian alphabet. Its graphic and fluid letters found their way onto wall panels and became an inventive print for sofas, a subtle nod to the locale that enhances the sense of place within the hotel.
A dazzling tune
The interior continues to impress with its natural plywood-coloured wall panelling and graffiti art, portraying musicians in dynamic poses. Coupled with bright accentual lighting fixtures and furniture, these elements combine to create a dazzling effect that is both stimulating and intriguing.

An eye for inclusivity
With a keen eye for inclusivity, STUDIO SHOO carefully transformed the public area into a welcoming social hub catering to diverse preferences and needs. Various zones cater to different activities: a playful area complete with a ping pong table and PlayStation; a professional space for business meetings and calls; a cosy nook for private conversations; a market zone showcasing local products, and most importantly, an accessible space for those with physical challenges.
Communal cues
The ping pong table, in particular, holds a special place in the design scheme. Bearing a unique print by artist Ksenia Stoylik, the table morphs from a gaming zone to a communal breakfast table, reinforcing the idea of multifunctionality at the heart of the design.

Khachatryan believes that modern design should be boundless and imbued with thoughtful details. She said: “When I come up with the concept of a project, I pay great attention to what emotions and impressions this space will evoke in people.” This sentiment shines through in the Ibis Budget Tbilisi project, where the focus was not only on functional design but also on creating an engaging, unique experience.

As part of their portfolio, STUDIO SHOO also designs art exhibitions, develops object design, and even has its own collection of furniture and clothing. With a signature style of bright minimalism, each project delivers a distinct message and value, all while echoing the philosophy of the studio: creating functional, memorable spaces for people.
Through the transformation of Ibis Budget Tbilisi, STUDIO SHOO showcases the power of design in reframing our understanding of budget-friendly accommodations. Rather than mere places to stay, hotels can be vibrant, culturally rich spaces that tell a story and leave an indelible impression on their guests.
