Rapid Fire round with Arti Gugnani, Partner, Vijay Gupta Architects

She gives us details on her favourite design book, Architect, design inspiration, hobbies and a personal message to all the young Architect's out there.

AIS Mohali.

1. What is the inspiration behind your design firm’s name?

The practice was founded by my father, Mr Vijay Gupta. He was the one who inspired all of us to pursue architecture, and it is his name and values that define our firm.

2. What is that one design book/movie you found inspiring?

I enjoyed reading ‘The Little Book of Hygge: The Danish Way to Live Well’ by Louisa Thomsen Brits. The book showed me how to welcome abundance and contentment into my life and to live a wholesome life by focusing on what moves me.

3. In what ways does your personality reflect in your designs?

An empathetic attitude helps me better understand stakeholders and end users. By being empathetic, I create better solutions that meet their needs while remaining respectful of the intrinsic qualities of the site’s natural resources.

4. What inspires you in your day-to-day architectural practice?

My father’s passion for architecture and zest for life are my constant sources of inspiration.

5. Who is your favourite architect?

Frank Lloyd Wright is my all time favourite architect. I find his work poetic in nature.

6. Do you have a signature style?

I don’t want to be defined by a specific style. Instead, I would say that my work is a natural response to the site, the environment, the client and user requirements.

7. The one design philosophy you swear by?

I like to keep things clean, simple and as close to nature as possible. Simple is beautiful!

8. The one design quote you find timeless?

I find this little quote by Norman Foster timeless: “I think you never stop learning”. I saw these words reflected in my father, who, even in his eighties, was eager and enthusiastic about learning something new.

9. A hobby that sets you apart?

I love to cook and try out new dishes. It is an immensely de-stressing and relaxing hobby.

10. A message to those few young practising Architects out there?

I have a simple message for posterity- work with love and passion because, as designers, you have the power to change the world.

11. Which design blog/page/handle do you follow avidly?

I follow Apple because I believe they design every product and every aspect of their organisation with unmatched finesse.
