The move towards activity-based workspaces

Pooja Ashley and Arbaysis Ashley, co-founders of Ashleys, explain why variety is, in fact, one of the most important trends in office design today

The move towards activity-based workspaces

The design of workspaces evolves constantly with the altering work culture that is a predictable result of globalization and rapidly shifting perception of brands. In the beginning of 21st century, it would have been unimaginable for a workspace to accommodate informal and recreational spaces along with uptight workstations; offices then were bound to sophistication and formality of the traditional work culture.

However, today, corporate giants have acknowledged the impact on productivity as a result of varied spatial elements such as break out zones, open plans, play zones, resting pods, phone booths, gymnasiums etc. These are more than just mere fancy additions; these spaces are a result of extensive research on employee productivity.

Similarly, The thought of collaborative offices is so diverse that it has changed the work ethos of start-ups and entrepreneurs. Consequently, a culture of communal working spaces began, which enabled the concept of co-working and provides standalone businesses with amenities such as cafeteria, waiting lounge, conference rooms, break-out zones etc.

Furthermore, recent circumstances have opened a portal to a new realm of working culture – Work from home. Lack of comfortable working pockets at home has evoked the idea of ‘Home offices’ that are intended to accentuate the productivity of employees, while working from home. Perhaps, home offices might become a requisite in the future and real estate might include collaborative business centres in residential projects, by redefining the scope of existing mixed-use developments.
